I just stumbled across this Bare Naked Ladies gem, Barenaked Ladies - Bedside Manor, stick around for the Van Morisson interlude. These guys really get it. The whole series is here.
I had been meaning to buy their new record cause they are boldly going where others fear to go. No big record company, trying to sell their own music in this new world order which is arriving daily.
But, I go to www.bnlmusic.com expecting to plunk down $9.99 for the new album and be happy that I get new music and BNL get all the money. No record company, no record store (if you can call what passes for a record store now days a record store), just cash to the artist. No such luck, there are two new records ? Hmmm.... which one ls where I want to go ? One is called "Barenaked Ladies Are Me" and one is called "Barenaked Ladies Are Men" ? huh ? The idea is to rid yourself of the evil record company influence and get the $ to the artists. This doesn't mean that drop all common sense when trying to sell the records.
Worse, one record is from 9/06, one from 2/07 ? huh ? does not having a record company allow you to crank out more and better music quicker ? no. It makes for watered down junk like most CDs which the big companies are putting out. So you say, then the CDs will be even cheaper since we all know that, well, there is likely loads of filler in here. No such luck, one is $14 and one is $19. Man you have got to be kidding me.
The videos are cool, the idea of going it alone at this exciting time is fantastic. Abandoning all common sense, marketing 101 and jacking up the prices because you decide to go it alone ? Not going to work. Lying in bed, just like Brian Wilson did, lying in bed..........we'll never know if there is another one like this laying in wait on some overpriced independently produced and ridiculously named product. Disappointing.
